No. One of our main pillars is respect for indigenous ancestral knowledge and the community's own needs, so it is they who decide which species to plant, where to plant them, when to plant them and how to do it. Each tree responds to a community need, be they fruit, medicinal or timber trees (understand the latter as a conscious use of the tree for construction of houses, crafts, canoes and oars).

There is a physical owner and a token owner. The indigenous communities that live in the planting area are the physical owners of the trees, since they are the ones who plant and care for them. After three years of virtual monitoring, the tree becomes clearly theirs. However, the adopter of the tree has the right to follow-up for the period of 36 months, and having the planting coordinates can go to visit the adopted tree. When making the payment and registering the data of your gift tree, you will be asked for information such as the name and email of the person to whom you are going to give the tree. With these data, Saving The Amazon notifies the indicated email that you have given them the planting of a tree, the reason and even a personalized dedication if you specify it in the form. Saving The Amazon sends a letter with the photograph of the georeferenced marked tree, and an adoption certificate with the name of the person, the planting coordinates and the species of tree planted. Every six months until the age of 3, Saving The Amazon will update the tree photographs on the website as proof of the tree's survival. As you are the one who made the purchase, you will also receive notifications and a copy of the email sent.

The name is marked on a biodegradable template, which is located in front of the planted tree. This template has an approximate durability of 3 to 4 years and is duly stamped with the SAVING THE AMAZON logo. Yes. We have an ethno-tourism program launched in 2019 called the Amazon Escape, which has the purpose of promoting tourism in the Amazon region of Vaupés and making our project known from within. This program lasts for 6 days where people will be able to meet and share with indigenous communities, help in the planting, in particular projects that the community has, and they will be able to access the planting areas. With the help of our operators in the field, they will be able to track the coordinates and search for the planted tree.

Currently the plantings are carried out in two countries, Colombia and Brazil. In Colombia we sow in three departments of the Amazon region: Vaupés, Caquetá and Putumayo. In each department we plant in different indigenous reservations helping different communities. In Brazil, plantings are carried out in the communities of Kuntanawa and Piracuara. Our purpose is to reach more reserves and planting areas throughout the Amazon, not only in Colombia and Brazil, but in the other countries that comprise it. On the other hand, we have planting areas in the Colombian Pacific in the department of Chocó, where we carry out the Bosques de Paz program.

The Amazon is the most important ecosystem on the planet for various reasons, such as its great capacity to absorb and retain CO2, thus cooling the planet, the biodiversity of fauna and flora, the amount of fresh water that flows through its rivers and is home to the most vulnerable ancestral indigenous communities on the planet. All of this is currently threatened by deforestation, fires and other extractive activities that destroy this important ecosystem every day. Caring for and preserving it is vital to the permanence of the human race on Earth. For this reason, we decided to work right where there is most need, both at the ecosystem and humanitarian levels.

Indigenous communities benefit from signing up as a seed family. Each registered family receives a payment in money or in kind for each tree planted, and since there are massive plantings of more than thousands of trees, the payments are significant. The more you plant the more work there is for the communities. Likewise, payments are made for photographs taken throughout the 3 years that the tree is monitored. To ensure that the project is successful and that the trees grow it is necessary to maintain the trees, take care of the land and clean them of pests. These jobs are also paid. Likewise, the employees that we have in the plant, such as the field supervisor and planting director, are part of the indigenous communities and are an example and incentive of the possibility of job escalation. Saving The Amazon is a non-profit organization, so our fixed costs are the payment to our workers in the office and in the field (these being the payments to the indigenous communities that carry out the entire process of planting, marking trees, taking of coordinates and photographic taking of the trees). Beyond the payment for labor and payroll, we do NOT benefit financially as an institution.

There is a commitment from the communities not to cut down the trees after 36 months. And beyond the written commitment, there is a strong incentive for these trees to be of use to the community in a few years, either for their food security, medicinal, or for the ecosystem services offered by the trees. Furthermore, we work with indigenous communities that have a worldview deeply rooted in the care of their territories and the preservation of the Amazon, so that for them the felling of these trees is not a choice, since their priority is the care of the Mother Earth.

Bosques de Paz is an ally program of Saving The Amazon that was born in 2016 on the sidelines of the peace processes carried out in Colombia between the country and the former armed group FARC. Together with the indigenous communities of Vaupés, a proposal was made to President Juan Manuel Santos to plant a tree in the name of each of the victims of the armed conflict in the country, in order to create a living monument of memory and reconciliation. It was inaugurated in Mitú and several plantings have already been carried out in the department of Chocó, specifically in Bojayá and La Encharcazón, two places strongly affected by the violence that has been experienced in Colombia for more than 50 years.
